Abstract

Side friction and soil pressures caused by lateral soil swelling are likely to be significant for deeply embedded beams that would typically be used on extremely reactive siutes. The paper presents a method for finite element analysis of a stiffened slab resting on an expansive soil foundation. A thermo-mechanical analogy is applied for moisture diffusion and soil swelling/shrinkage. The influence of side friction and lateral swelling pressures on slab deflections are considered
